Girls Rule Spring Skills
2010
Winnetka Hockey is excited is excited
to offer for the 5th year our “Girls Rule Spring
Skills Program”. Consistent with USA Hockey
Development model we will offer a combination of skills
focus (mainly power skating, edges and stick handling) and
small area games and 3 v 3 to help develop our players.
The program will run 9 weeks beginning March 20th. We will
skate two times a week (Tuesdays and Saturday) in three age
groups (U8s/beginners, U10s, and the U12/14/HS). The times
are as follows:
Tuesday Night
Saturday Afternoon
U8:
5:50pm-6:50pm 1:10pm-2:10pm
U10:
7:00pm-8:00pm 2:20pm-3:20pm
U12/14/HS
8:10pm-9:10pm 3:30pm-4:30pm
The spring program is open to all
girls playing house league or travel hockey during the
2009/2010 season. The program will start March 20th
and will end May 25th with approximately 8 weeks
of skating given holidays. Following the 1st
couple of sessions, we may suggest players skate with a
different age group to insure that the skaters are placed in
the appropriate group based on their skill level. For
example, a strong U8 player would be encouraged to skate
with the U10 group. Conversely, a U10 that is newer to
hockey might be encouraged to skate with the U8. Placement
based on age and skill will better allow the coaches to
developed appropriate curriculum for each session and
provide the best experience to each player.
Tuesday nights will be focused small
area games, battle drills and 3 v 3 with selected skill
development and team play. The Tuesday sessions will be run
by many of the WHC coaches lead by Frank Machaj, Ted Devine,
Kyle Pecka, Ken House, Theresa Davis, Nancy Glass, John
Babnik and Erik Kahler, plus other members of the Winnetka
coaching staff. In addition, members of the New Trier
Coaching Staff and hockey team as well as other local Women
hockey players have offered to assist with the clinics.
For the Saturday skills sessions we
have worked with several skills coaches from around the area
to bring in a group of All-Star Skill Coaches including:
- Annie Camins, the Current Youth
Hockey Director for the Blackhawks and former WHC Girl’s
Hockey Director and Loyola Girl’s Varsity Coach, will
lead sessions focused on stick handling, passing and
shooting skills
- Kenny McCudden, Skills Coach for
the Chicago Wolves who also does work with three NHL
teams, will focus on skating skills
- Graeme Townsend, Skill and Skating
Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, will focus on skating
and overall skills
- Besa, the Skills and Skating Coach
for the Pittsburg Penguins, will focus on over-speed
skating skills and explosive starts
- Martin Malley, the Head of
European Elite Hockey, will lead sessions on that focus
on improving edge work and stick handling
- Mark Ciacco, the Skills Coach for
the Phoenix Coyotes, will focus on shooting and scoring
- Kevin Delaney, the overall skills
director for the Winnetka Hockey Club, has graciously
agreed to provide overall support as needed
DJ Lavarre,
WHC Hockey Director, has agreed to run one of our Tuesday
night sessions and potentially assist on additional
evenings. There is a chance that 1 or 2 of these coaches
may have a last minute conflict given playoffs, but we are
committed to having extremely high quality skills coaches
for all of the sessions.
These skills instructors will mostly
work with the U10 and above groups. When we have the
professional team coaches, we will likely to combine the U10
and above groups for a 60-90 minute session to keep the
costs reasonable. The remaining time on the ice that day we
will also focus on skills training. Our U8 and beginner
program like in years past will focus on teaching the girls
the basics of the game and having FUN so they are excited
about playing hockey next fall. The U8s will have
experienced skills coaches who have worked with children at
this level. Goalies should participate in the goalie
training offered by the club (see Spring Travel Program on
the WHC website) and can participate in the Girls Rule
Spring Skills free of charge.
Like in years past the Girls Rules
Spring Skills programs are open to kids outside the WHC
program. If you have friends who play in other programs
please encourage them to participate. Participation allows
us to keep the cost reasonable.
Girls Rules Spring Skills session will
be $275 for the U8s and $350 for the U10s and above. If you
have any questions please reach out to Ted Devine
